User Roles and Permissions in Laravel 8

Hello Artisan ,
Do you looking to know how to create user role permission in laravel? So I hope you are on right page. Today our article topic is user ,roles and permissions tutorial on laravel 8. Now in this article, i will implement and show laravel 8 user roles and permissions tutorial. i will explain shortly and simply step by step laravel 8 spatie/laravel-permission on laravel application. Now I will show step by step explain laravel 8 acl tutorial for beginner. Here we are learn how to create User Roles and Permissions in Laravel 8.

Here i am using spatie github package for create roles and permissions in laravel 8 application. Now just follow bellow steps to create acl in laravel 8 application.

Spatie users, roles, permission composer package provide us a good way to create acl in any laravel application. They are provide us how to assign role to user, how to assign permission to a user and also how to assign a permission assign to a roles. So here i will write all steps by steps by creating roles and permissions in our any laravel 8 applications.

Roles and Permissions through we can create it several types of users with different type of role and permission. I mean some user can only see only listing of items module, others some user can also edit items modules, and also for delete module and etc.

Now in this example i will create three modules as listed below:

User Management

Role Management

Product Management

After assign permission against any user. And after register user, we don’t have any roles, so we can edit our details and assign admin role to our from User Management. After that we can create our own user role with permission like role-list, role-create, role-edit, role-delete and also  product-list, product-create, product-edit, product-delete. So we can aslo check with assign new user and check that.

We need to just follow few steps and we will get full example of ACL:

Step 1: Laravel 8 Installation

Here i am going from scratch so, If you haven’t any installed laravel in your system then you can run bellow command and get fresh Laravel project on you localhost.

composer create-project --prefer-dist laravel/laravel blog

Step 2: Install Composer Packages

Now we need to install Spatie package for our ACL, So that way we can use it’s method. Also we will need to install form collection package. So Open our terminal and run bellow command on command terminal.

composer require spatie/laravel-permission
composer require laravelcollective/html

Now need to open config/app.php file and need to add service provider and aliase.

config/app.php

'providers' => [
 ....
 Spatie\Permission\PermissionServiceProvider::class,
],

We can also do custom changes on our Spatie package, so if we also want to changes then we can fire bellow command and get new config file in config/permission.php and also migration files.

php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Spatie\Permission\PermissionServiceProvider"

Now we can see permission.php file and also one migrations. So we can run migration command to using following command:

php artisan migrate

Step 3: Create Product Migration

Now In this step we need to create three migration for products table by using bellow command:

php artisan make:migration create_products_table

products table:

<?php

use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Schema;
use Illuminate\Database\Schema\Blueprint;
use Illuminate\Database\Migrations\Migration;

class CreateProductsTable extends Migration
{
    /**
     * Run the migrations.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function up()
    {
        Schema::create('products', function (Blueprint $table) {
            $table->id();
            $table->string('name');
            $table->text('detail');
            $table->timestamps();
        });
    }

    /**
     * Reverse the migrations.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function down()
    {
        Schema::dropIfExists('products');
    }
}

Now run migration:

php artisan migrate

Step 4: Create Models

Now in this step we need to create model for User and Product table, so if you have fresh project then you have User Model have so just replace bellow code and other one you should to create.

app/Models/User.php

<?php

namespace App\Models;

use Illuminate\Contracts\Auth\MustVerifyEmail;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Factories\HasFactory;
use Illuminate\Foundation\Auth\User as Authenticatable;
use Illuminate\Notifications\Notifiable;
use Spatie\Permission\Traits\HasRoles;

class User extends Authenticatable
{
    use HasFactory, Notifiable, HasRoles;

    /**
     * The attributes that are mass assignable.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $fillable = [
        'name',
        'email',
        'password',
    ];

    /**
     * The attributes that should be hidden for arrays.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $hidden = [
        'password',
        'remember_token',
    ];

    /**
     * The attributes that should be cast to native types.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $casts = [
        'email_verified_at' => 'datetime',
    ];
}

app/Models/Product.php

<?php

namespace App\Models;

use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Factories\HasFactory;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Model;

class Product extends Model
{
    use HasFactory;

    /**
     * The attributes that are mass assignable.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $fillable = [
        'name', 'detail'
    ];
}

Step 5: Add Middleware

Spatie package provide it has in-built middleware that way we can use it simply and that is display as bellow:

role

permission

So, we need to add middleware in Kernel.php file this way in bellow :

app/Http/Kernel.php

....
protected $routeMiddleware = [
    ....
    'role' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\RoleMiddleware::class,
    'permission' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\PermissionMiddleware::class,
    'role_or_permission' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\RoleOrPermissionMiddleware::class,
]
....

Step 6: Create Authentication

We need to follow just few step to make auth in our laravel 8 application.

First we need to install new laravel/ui package as like as bellow:

composer require laravel/ui

Here, we need to generate auth scaffolding in laravel 8 by using laravel ui command. so, let’s generate it by using bellow command fire:

php artisan ui bootstrap --auth

Now we need to run npm command, otherwise we can not see a better layout of login and register page.

Install NPM:

npm install

Run NPM:

npm run dev

Step 7: Create Routes

Now we need to add number of route for users module, products module and also roles module. In this route i also use middleware with permission for roles and products route, so add route this way:

routes/web.php

<?php

use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Route;

use App\Http\Controllers\HomeController;
use App\Http\Controllers\RoleController;
use App\Http\Controllers\UserController;
use App\Http\Controllers\ProductController;

/*
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Web Routes
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
| Here is where you can register web routes for your application. These
| routes are loaded by the RouteServiceProvider within a group which
| contains the "web" middleware group. Now create something great!
|
*/

Route::get('/', function () {
    return view('welcome');
});

Auth::routes();

Route::get('/home', [HomeController::class, 'index'])->name('home');

Route::group(['middleware' => ['auth']], function() {
    Route::resource('roles', RoleController::class);
    Route::resource('users', UserController::class);
    Route::resource('products', ProductController::class);
});

Step 8: Add Controllers

In this step we need to add three controller for users module, products module and also roles module so we can create three controller like as bellow:

app/Http/Controllers/UserController.php

<?php

namespace App\Http\Controllers;

use Illuminate\Http\Request;
use App\Http\Controllers\Controller;
use App\Models\User;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Role;
use DB;
use Hash;
use Illuminate\Support\Arr;

class UserController extends Controller
{
    /**
     * Display a listing of the resource.
     *
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function index(Request $request)
    {
        $data = User::orderBy('id','DESC')->paginate(5);
        return view('users.index',compact('data'))
            ->with('i', ($request->input('page', 1) - 1) * 5);
    }

    /**
     * Show the form for creating a new resource.
     *
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function create()
    {
        $roles = Role::pluck('name','name')->all();
        return view('users.create',compact('roles'));
    }

    /**
     * Store a newly created resource in storage.
     *
     * @param  \Illuminate\Http\Request  $request
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function store(Request $request)
    {
        $this->validate($request, [
            'name' => 'required',
            'email' => 'required|email|unique:users,email',
            'password' => 'required|same:confirm-password',
            'roles' => 'required'
        ]);

        $input = $request->all();
        $input['password'] = Hash::make($input['password']);

        $user = User::create($input);
        $user->assignRole($request->input('roles'));

        return redirect()->route('users.index')
                        ->with('success','User created successfully');
    }

    /**
     * Display the specified resource.
     *
     * @param  int  $id
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function show($id)
    {
        $user = User::find($id);
        return view('users.show',compact('user'));
    }

    /**
     * Show the form for editing the specified resource.
     *
     * @param  int  $id
     * @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
     */
    public function edit($id)
    {
        $user = User::find($id);
        $roles = Role::pluck('name','name')->all();
        $userRole = $user->roles->pluck('name','name')->all();

        return view('users.edit',compact('user','roles','userRole'));
    }

    /**

     */
    public function update(Request $request, $id)
    {
        $this->validate($request, [
            'name' => 'required',
            'email' => 'required|email|unique:users,email,'.$id,
            'password' => 'same:confirm-password',
            'roles' => 'required'
        ]);

        $input = $request->all();
        if(!empty($input['password'])){
            $input['password'] = Hash::make($input['password']);
        }else{
            $input = Arr::except($input,array('password'));
        }

        $user = User::find($id);
        $user->update($input);
        DB::table('model_has_roles')->where('model_id',$id)->delete();

        $user->assignRole($request->input('roles'));

        return redirect()->route('users.index')
                        ->with('success','User updated successfully');
    }

        return redirect()->route('users.index')
                        ->with('success','User deleted successfully');
    }
}

    public function update(Request $request, $id)
    {
        $this->validate($request, [
            'name' => 'required',
            'permission' => 'required',
        ]);

        return redirect()->route('roles.index')
                        ->with('success','Role updated successfully');
    }
    /**

    public function destroy($id)
    {
        DB::table("roles")->where('id',$id)->delete();
        return redirect()->route('roles.index')
                        ->with('success','Role deleted successfully');
    }
}

Step 9: Add Blade Files

Now in this step, we need to create following files as like listed bellow:

Theme Layout

app.blade.php

Users Module

index.blade.php create.blade.php edit.blade.php show.blade.php

Roles Module

index.blade.php create.blade.php edit.blade.php show.blade.php

Product Module

index.blade.php create.blade.php edit.blade.php show.blade.php

So, let’s create following files as like bellow:

resources/views/layouts/app.blade.php

<html lang="{{ app()->getLocale() }}">
<head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
    <!-- CSRF Token -->
    <meta name="csrf-token" content="{{ csrf_token() }}">
    <title>{{ config('app.name', 'Laravel 8 User Roles and Permissions Tutorial') }}</title>
    <!-- Scripts -->
    <script src="{{ asset('js/app.js') }}" defer></script>
    <!-- Fonts -->
    <link rel="dns-prefetch" href="https://fonts.gstatic.com">
    <link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Raleway:300,400,600" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
    <!-- Styles -->
    <link href="{{ asset('css/app.css') }}" rel="stylesheet">
</head>
<body>
    <div id="app">
        <nav class="navbar navbar-expand-md navbar-light navbar-laravel">
            <div class="container">
                <a class="navbar-brand" href="{{ url('/') }}">
                    Laravel 8 User Roles and Permissions - Codingspoint.com
                </a>
                <button class="navbar-toggler" type="button" data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#navbarSupportedContent" aria-controls="navbarSupportedContent" aria-expanded="false" aria-label="Toggle navigation">
                    <span class="navbar-toggler-icon"></span>
                </button>

Step 10: Create Seeder For Permissions and AdminUser

So now in this step we will create few seeder for permissions, Right now we have fixed permission so we create by using seeder as listed bellow, but if we can add more permission as we want:

1.role-list

2.role-create

3.role-edit

4.role-delete

5.product-list

6.product-create

7.product-edit

8.product-delete

So, now first create seeder using bellow command:

php artisan make:seeder PermissionTableSeeder

And now put bellow code in PermissionTableSeeder seeder this way:

database/seeds/PermissionTableSeeder.php

<?php

namespace Database\Seeders;

use Illuminate\Database\Seeder;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Permission;

class PermissionTableSeeder extends Seeder
{
    /**
     * Run the database seeds.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function run()
    {
        $permissions = [
           'role-list',
           'role-create',
           'role-edit',
           'role-delete',
           'product-list',
           'product-create',
           'product-edit',
           'product-delete'
        ];

        foreach ($permissions as $permission) {
             Permission::create(['name' => $permission]);
        }
    }
}

After this we need to run bellow command for run PermissionTableSeeder seeder:

php artisan db:seed --class=PermissionTableSeeder

Now let’s create new seeder for creating admin user.

php artisan make:seeder CreateAdminUserSeeder

database/seeds/CreateAdminUserSeeder.php

<?php

namespace Database\Seeders;

use Illuminate\Database\Seeder;
use App\Models\User;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Role;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Permission;

class CreateAdminUserSeeder extends Seeder
{
    /**
     * Run the database seeds.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function run()
    {
        $user = User::create([
            'name' => 'Hardik Savani',
            'email' => 'admin@gmail.com',
            'password' => bcrypt('123456')
        ]);

        $role = Role::create(['name' => 'Admin']);

        $permissions = Permission::pluck('id','id')->all();

        $role->syncPermissions($permissions);

        $user->assignRole([$role->id]);
    }
}
php artisan db:seed --class=CreateAdminUserSeeder

Now we are ready to run full example of ACL in laravel. So let’s run our example so run bellow command for quick run:

php artisan serve

Access By

http://localhost:8000/

Now you can login with following credential:
